François-Marie Arouet, better known by the pen name Voltaire was a French writer, philosopher and historian famous for his advocacy of civil rights including freedom of religion and separation of church and state and for his very popular wit. Voltaire wrote many things ! Some plays, poetry, essays, novels,and scientific and historical works too. He wrote more than 2 000 pamphlets and 20 000 letters. He was one of the most famous writers in the Enlightenment century along with Montesquieu or Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His work and ideas influenced important thinkers during the American and French revolutions.
His most famous witty writings are :

- Micromegas
- Candide
- L’ingénu
